Panama: Canopy Camp and the Darién
Few places in Central America invoke feelings of tropical wilderness like Panama’s Darién province. The Panamerican Highway has one and only break along its passage to Tierra del Fuego. The “Darién Gap”, as it is known, spans across the southeastern end of Panama from the end-of-the-road town of Yaviza to the border of Colombia. This region includes Darién National Park with over 1,000,000 acres protected and many indigenous regions within unspoiled forest. We will be staying just west of Yaviza and will take in some of the best of Darién birding from our home base at the world-famous Canopy Camp. A part of the Canopy Family, Panama’s leading eco-tourism company, the camp has become renowned for exceptional birding, delicious food, and comfortable accommodations.
The Darién region includes 25-30 species not regularly found in the Canal Zone, including some restricted to the Chocó bioregion such as Dusky-backed Jacamar, Black Oropendola and Gray-cheeked Nunlet. In recent years, the Canopy Camp has been one of the best locations in the neotropics to see Harpy Eagles, and we will be devoting a day to finding them. Beyond specialties, we will see a wonderful array of neotropical species, many from the beautiful grounds and trails of the Canopy Camp.
This tour can be combined with our tour to the Canopy Lodge and Tower (March 15-23, 2025)! A $300 discount will be applied to the total price for those joining us on both tours.
Itineraries will be updated with plenty of time before the next departure. Our itineraries usually show minimal changes between years, but some substantive updates can occur as birding access and information evolves. For any specific questions regarding these trips, please contact us.
